Welcome to LivingWithFaith.org
Faith is one of the most important aspects of Christian life and one which every Christian needs to understand and continually develop. We see this in the book of Hebrews which tells us “… without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). So what is faith? For many people, faith is just a synonym for hope; even in the minds of many Christians the two concepts are often confused. But faith is not hope, as we see in the words of Paul: “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love…” (1 Corinthians 13:13). Clearly, from the biblical perspective, faith and hope are different things.
The dictionary tells us that faith is “belief with strong conviction; firm belief and complete trust in something for which there may be no tangible physical proof.” The Bible puts it this way: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). This does not necessarily mean that faith is the opposite of reason, as many people think. The two can be perfectly complementary (see the article “Is Faith Reasonable?” on this site).
But in the last analysis any definition of faith is just a definition. Imagine trying to understand a concept such as friendship or love purely from a dictionary definition. In the same way, faith must be experienced to fully understand the concept, but we can learn about it and learn ways to grow and enhance our faith, just as we might read books on developing friendship or strengthening our marital relationship. That is what this site is all about - learning to live with faith!
